Age In Place: Preventing Loneliness [Downsizing Digest - Vol 6]

by Jess Lex

Many long-time homeowners decide to move out of their homes in favor of moving into communities where they can more easily connect with others. To stay in your home or to move? There is no right or wrong answer. If you have decided to stay in your home and you live alone, you may be concerned about social isolation. What are some things that you can do to prevent loneliness?

  • Volunteer - There is a variety of volunteer work you can do throughout the community from tutoring, to helping at food pantries, or even ushering at a local theater. If you want to volunteer without leaving your home, consider becoming a penpal to a student or donating craft projects like sewing and knitting to hospitals or homeless shelters.
  • Adopt a Pet - While adopting an animal can be quite a commitment, there’s nothing quite like having an animal companion to keep you company. Dogs and cats are not the only pet options, so keep an open mind.
  • Join a Club - There are many in-person meetups for people of like interests. Many communities also have senior centers that provide great programming options. If you don’t feel like getting out and about, you can also join an online club! Online clubs may even connect you with people all over the world. How cool is that?
