DOWNSIZING TIP: DIY vs. PROFESSIONAL

by Jess Lex, REALTOR® and SRES® with Jess Lex Homes - Realty Executives Cooper Spransy

This is my 2nd year of providing this downsizing-inspired newsletter. This will also be my 3rd year of presenting “Downsize with Ease” seminars out in the community. All this to say, some of you have been on this decluttering and downsizing journey with me for a few years already. Kudos to you for sticking with it and making progress when you can!

As we turn the page on a new year, you might be realizing that you’ve been working at this downsizing thing for a while now and you don’t feel like you’ve gotten much accomplished. Please don’t get discouraged! It’s a long process for even the most driven and energetic of individuals.

If you’re feeling like you’ve tried hard to make progress doing this yourself and you can’t seem to make the headway you’d like, don’t forget that there are many companies in our area that specialize in a professional approach to downsizing and decluttering. These companies will come to your home and do a free consultation with you to analyze your needs. They can help you figure out what to donate, sell, throw away, or save for family and can even help you unpack and set up a new space if you move.

Yes, there is a monetary cost to these services, and I wouldn’t call it inexpensive. But think about it this way. There is also a cost to NOT making progress on your decluttering goals. It may not be an obvious financial cost (although, if you ever have to sell your house and it’s not decluttered, that will definitely cost you by reducing your bottom line at your sale). Instead, it is potentially an emotional cost. Knowing that you need to declutter but can’t seem to make progress does take a toll on your emotional well-being. It can cause unneeded stress and anxiety that impacts your mood.

If you continue to go through this process alone, you may end up carrying the stress of it for several more years. Although hiring someone to help will have a cost, the benefit you will gain in mental clarity and removal of stress and guilt will be worth every penny.
