Step 1: Prepare

The downsizing process naturally brings up a wide range of emotions, and it's completely normal to feel them. Some of the most common feelings people experience during this transition include overwhelm, nostalgia, fear of change, and excitement.

For many, just thinking about where to begin the process can feel overwhelming. Others worry they’ll get stuck in sentimental feelings that make it hard to let go. And for those also facing a move, the fear of change can feel almost paralyzing. If you're experiencing any of these emotions, you're not alone—these feelings are incredibly common..

The most effective way to move through these emotions is to first acknowledge that they’re real. Ignoring them only gives them more power. The next step is to have a manageable plan. With a plan, you'll have the process broken down into smaller steps, in priority order, so you know what the most important tasks are and what to do next.

With Jess Lex Homes, we assist with creating your plan and timeframe. We provide support, encouragement, and a listening ear as you complete the steps on your downsizing journey. You probably haven't done this before, but we have—many times—and look forward to sharing our experience to make the process easy.

Once you've spent some time on your preparation, you can move on to Step 2

Step 2: Declutter

Decluttering is one of the most essential—and often emotional—steps in the journey of downsizing. For long-time homeowners, letting go of years of accumulated belongings can feel overwhelming, but approaching it with a clear, manageable plan makes a big difference.

Keep in mind, you are starting a process, not a one-day task. For many, it may take months or even years to fully work through. You’ll get better at these decisions as you go, and it’s completely normal to sort through things more than once before making final decisions.

You may want to categorize your things into 5 different piles. Here are a few helpful tips and guidelines to get you started with the sorting.

Step 2 - Declutter

Keep

Focus on what truly adds value to your life and fits your future lifestyle.

  • Do I use this regularly?
  • Does it serve a clear purpose?
  • Would I miss it if it were gone?

Keep what you love and use often. Be honest about what you’ll really need moving forward.

Give to Family

Pass down sentimental items like heirlooms or keepsakes to loved ones.

  • Who would appreciate this?
  • Who might find meaning in it?

Offer items with intention—not obligation—to preserve your family’s story.

Donate

Give items in good condition a second life with someone else.

  • Is this item in good condition?
  • Have I used it in the last year?
  • Could it bring joy to someone else?

Sell

Great-condition items like furniture or tools may have resale value. Use the proceeds to offset moving costs.

Throw Away/Recycle

Broken, expired, or unusable items should be tossed or recycled.

Tip: Declutter just before garbage day to avoid second-guessing and keep momentum going.

Decluttering isn’t just about making space—it’s about making room for what matters most. Whether you're preparing to move or simplifying your home, this process helps create clarity and calm. Plus, it makes the next phase—whether buying, selling, or settling in—feel far less overwhelming.

Step 3: Move
