How to Stay Motivated While Downsizing
You’ve been working on your downsizing process slowly but surely, yet are finding that as time passes, your level of motivation to keep making progress is dwindling ever so slightly. This is totally normal! Since the downsizing process can take the average person several YEARS to complete, it can be hard to sustain consistent effort over that length of time. So what can you do to stay motivated? Read on for several ideas.
Idea 1: Read about downsizing. There are several great books available on the topic. See some of our favorites here. Jess Lex Homes also mails out a Quarterly Downsizing Newsletter that contains tips, inspiration, and great vendor recommendations. You can sign up for that newsletter here.
Idea 2: Attend a seminar on downsizing. Many senior centers and senior living communities bring in professionals throughout the year to speak on the topic. Watch our website for our offerings of our Downsize with Ease seminar in the South Central Wisconsin area. Even if you’ve already been to a seminar like this, there is no shame in taking a refresher course to bring you back to basics.
Idea 3: Gather a group of friends monthly to discuss downsizing and hold each other accountable to progress towards your goals. If you’re not sure if you know anyone who is downsizing, reach out to us. We know lots of folks going through this process and would be happy to see if we can connect you with another accountability partner in our network.
Idea 4: Read articles or watch videos about downsizing for 15 minutes before you get started on your session for the day. Doing this can empower you and remind you why you’re doing what you’re doing. It may give you just the jolt of motivation you need to make some more progress.
Idea 5: Turn on music to keep your energy high while you’re decluttering. Most of us have a song that instantly gets us in the right mood to work hard on something. Whatever song that is for you, use it to your advantage.

If you’re finding yourself at a standstill with your progress, reach out. We’d be happy to talk through the process with you anytime and troubleshoot what has you stuck.
